08/27 (Sat.) Ideal work and real success(Host: Christina Wu)

文章 Tom Lee »

Session 1:
Jason Fried: Why work does not happen at work
http://www.ted.com/talks/jason_fried_wh ... k#t-843707

Section 2:
Alain de Botton: A kinder, gentler philosophy of Success
http://www.ted.com/talks/alain_de_botto ... s#t-838108

Section 1:
1. The speaker said that ”if we ask people where you go when you really need to get something done, almost no one answered the office”. Do you agree that working in the office is inefficient? Why? What kinds of distraction or interruption do we have faced in the office?
2. If you had freedom to design a perfect place for you to get work done, what would that place be like? List two things or attributes that this place would have. Is the place better than office?
3. Do you agree speaker’s opinion that ”meeting means all of sudden you are telling them that they have to stop doing that to do something else. So they go into meeting room, get together, and talk about stuff that does not matter usually ?” How often and how long does your department have meetings? What kind of meeting is efficient and what kind is inefficient?
4. If there is no-talk Thursday that colleagues do not talk to each other on Thursday for several hours or there is casual Friday that no meeting is held on Friday, in order to work more efficient, do you suggest to implement? What result will it occur?

Section 2:
1. What is Success? Describe a successful life according to your own values and ideas.
2. Think of a successful person you know personally. How did that person achieve success?
3. Do you think that real success defined by your self is different from other’s expectation? What makes the difference? If people are those who travel all over the world for one year, or help the poor and donate an amount of money, or happy house wives, are they successful? Why or why not?
4. The speaker said that “a snob is anybody who takes a small part of you and uses that to come to complete vision of who you are. Have you ever met snobs? How shall we view other’s judgement?
5. What are the most important habits necessary to success? How can a person develop them?

p.s. I will bring some candy and cake there.

Indeed, excellent topics!

An ideal workplace/environment? It does sound like a fantasy or the world of Utopia! Who has never complained about their work, bosses and workplace? Even Google and FB employees whine about their perks (too much gourmet food causing them to gain weight! Crazy? Huh?)

But I guess I miss that kind of office chaos and frenzy, especially the M&M, the Dilbert style M&M. :)
